The Ancient Glass Masterclass is a free academic skills event that invites UQ students to explore the practicalities of working with ancient glass with Dr Thomas Derrick, Gale Research Fellow in Ancient Glass and Material Culture at Macquarie University.
In this masterclass, Dr Derrick will give students an introduction to the history of ancient glass production, followed by a hands on session with real examples of ancient glass from the RD Milns Antiquities Museum collection, including discussion of how to record and look after ancient glass.

About the Presenter
Dr Thomas Derrick is an archaeologist who has worked on Roman glass from Britain, Italy, and Kosovo. He has a PhD in Romano-British glass (specifically perfume/cosmetic flasks) from the University of Leicester (UK). He is interested in the economically poorer populations that are hard to find in traditional literature and combines ancient history, archaeology, and archaeological theory to try and discuss these people. He is presently Gale Research Fellow in Ancient Glass and Material Culture at Macquarie University, where he is researching an extensive collection of ancient glass held at the university’s History Museum. He is a board member of the Association for the History of Glass and the Editor-in-Chief of their biannual magazine, Glass News.
